International Driving Permits

If you are planning to travel or spend time in another country, then you may be planning to drive a motor vehicle. If you are going to do so, then among updating old GPS units, you need to consider what kind of permit that you will need to do so. Fortunately, there are a lot of countries that will accept an international driving permit, and this is all that you will need in order to drive a private vehicle in them legally. You'll need to keep in mind, though, that these permits are not enough on their own. You'll also need to have your U.S. driver's license with you as well.

If you are thinking about getting one of these permits for when you are traveling in a foreign country, then you will need to apply through one of two organizations: The American Automobile Association (AAA) or The National Auto Club. These organizations have been authorized by the United States Department of State to issue such permits to drivers. In order to get one, you're going to have to apply for one and be accepted before it can be issued.

Tips Before Applying

One of the things that you need to be aware of when you are applying for an international driver's license is that you are going to have to meet an age requirement. Although you may be able to drive in the U.S. at a younger age, you are not going to be able to apply for an international permit unless you are 18 or older. If you do meet this requirement, then you can feel free to proceed with your application for an international permit. Otherwise, you will have to wait.

Before you apply for an international permit, you need to make sure that your current U.S. driver's license is going to remain valid for the duration of your planned trip. If you apply for an international permit, it will usually be good for one year from the date you receive it. If, however, your current driver's license is going to expire sooner, then so will your international permit. If your license is near its expiration date, then you should renew it before you even apply for a permit.

How to Apply

If you're ready to apply for an international permit, then you're going to need to make sure that you understand the application process before you do so. What you need to submit is going to depend on which organization you apply with, so you'll need to check with either AAA or the National Auto Club directly in order to find out what all is necessary. Usually, you can make an application by mail or in person at an office, but these rules may be different for each organization. Your best bet is to check things out first and see what you are dealing with before you apply.

Keeping in mind, that international driving permits are going to come with a fee. You won't be able to get one of these for free, and you'll have to pay a small fee for your application to be processed. When you think about it, though, such a small fee is really no big deal, as you will be able to use this permit in a wide variety of countries. It's really something that is useful to have if you plan on traveling in foreign countries and getting behind the wheel of a car. You will want to make sure that you are doing everything on the up and up, and getting an international permit is doing that.
