Kemba Walker a UConn Star

Kemba Walker, a college basketball player with the men's program at the University of Connecticut, has stepped up in a major way this season and filled the void left by some big departing names. Like the Vancouver Canucks in the NHL, UConn is experienceing a resurgence after players like Jerome Dyson, Stanley Robinson, and Gavin Edwards were missing from this season's roster and the incoming recruiting class did not seem to impress many experts. Yet student car insurance policyholders saw the Huskies in the Maui Invitational semifinals, facing off against second ranked Michigan State with a chance to win the game. And at this point, all Kemba Walker did after leading the team throughout the game was hit the game winning shot, carrying the Huskies to a convincing 70 to 67 victory over a Spartans team that was heavily favored going into the matchup.

At this point, Kemba Walker had announced his arrival to the rest of the college basketball world. Previously, Huskies head coach Jim Calhoun was already singing his praises to anyone who would listen, but no one in the media paid all that much attention because it seemed at the time that this particular UConn team was going to be irrelevant, after a season of discontent in which Calhoun and his staff were accused of some improprieties by the NCAA and a schedule no one expected them to master. Still, no one told any of this to Kemba Walker apparently. To top off his magic performance in the high profile Maui Invitational, he led his team to a win in the championship round.

Walker's Stats Keep Improving

In his third year on the team now, Kemba Walker is showing tons of the offensive firepower that got him recruited to UConn in the first place several years back. In the first couple seasons he was here, the team was so deep and so balanced and had so many different weapons that it did not need to rely on Walker to carry the load. But now that he is an upperclassman and an unquestioned leader with Dyson and the others gone, he has exploded offensively in the early going. When the Big East schedule gets rolling he may slow down a bit, but for now he is showing all of his skills and scoring from every area of the floor.

Kemba Walker has the shooting stroke to score from outside, including a much improved three point shot. If he calls bank and it goes in, it doesn't mean you get to save on car insurance, but if you're a Huskies fan it is still pretty sweet. His midrange game has improved to go along with enhanced feel and finishing power around the basket. At times it appears as though Kemba Walker is an unstoppable force on the basketball court. This is the player that Calhoun and UConn recruited out of high school when he was one of the country's top players in his graduating class.

Kemba Walker is on fire and he has his UConn Huskies rolling as well. The season is early, and teams like Michigan State will be better should they face teams like the Huskies again in March. But with a scorer and floor leader like this, the whole team can play loose and confident knowing that they have a go to guy who can deliver for them. Early in the college men's basketball season, Kemba Walker appears to be a national player of the year candidate. The season is young and there is still a lot of basketball yet to play, but Kemba Walker has shown that he has arrived as a star college basketball player.
