Rental Car Coverage

The most preferable manner in which to protect yourself when you rent a car is to purchase an insurance policy or to add a rider to your existing one that specifically extends collision and comprehensive coverage to a car you may rent in the future. If you do not own your own vehicle but still rent cars frequently, you may want to consider purchasing what is called non-owner insurance. It affords you the same type of protection as regular insurance, but it offers coverage to vehicle that you are not the owner of. Unless your current insurance policy explicitly states that it extends coverage to rental cars, you will need to be cautious in order to avoid exposing yourself to liability for an accident when you rent a car.

The types of insurance you may opt to purchase from a rental car agency may not provide the type of protection you need. These forms of insurance are commonly called loss damage waivers. Because most motorists are in a rush when they rent a car, they may not realize that the insurance that they purchase from an agency may not provide for their needs. For example, many times a loss damage waiver will protect a rental car in the event that it is stolen. However, the coverage will not extend to your personal items that may be in the car. Furthermore, a loss damage waiver will typically only provide collision or comprehensive insurance for its vehicle. This excludes the most common and most needed form of coverage - liability. If this is the case, you will be responsible for all of the costs of another party's damages if you are deemed at fault in an accident.

While rental agencies are required to provide insurance that complies with a state's law, there are many unscrupulous ones who will not. It is wise to familiarize yourself with the terms and conditions in the policy you purchase from an agency. Often, certain scenarios or situations are excluded from coverage. You can obtain verification of the details of your purchased policy from a rental company if you have any lingering concerns.
