Shannon Brown Gets Engaged

Sports news, such as Rocco Mediate and his run through the PGA, continue to dominate headlines. Shannon Brown, a shooting guard for the Los Angeles Lakers of the National Basketball Association, became engaged to singer Monica in October of 2010. Known for his tremendous athletic ability and a vertical leap higher than almost any other player in the league, he made several stops in the NBA after finishing his college career at Michigan State before finding his home in LA with the Lakers. He is also right at home in the Hollywood music scene. Aside from his romance with Monica, Shannon Brown can be seen in at least two different R & B music videos (one of them featuring Monica) and is frequently spotted about town at red carpet galas.

Brown's Early Career

In high school, Shannon Brown was teammates with another member of the 2006 NBA draft class, Dee Brown, who he is not related to. He became a McDonald's All American as well as Mr. Basketball for the state of Illinois while he was in high school. He chose to play for Coach Tom Izzo at Michigan State for his college ball. While at MSU, he became a much more complete player and really improved his defensive play, even becoming a member of the league's all defensive team. Playing for Izzo prepared him to turn pro and enter the NBA after his junior season.

NBA Trades

Shannon Brown was drafted late in the first round of the 2006 NBA draft by the Cleveland Cavaliers. He had injury problems while with Cleveland and never managed to become a regular part of the playing rotation, even playing in the Development League for one game. He was traded to the Chicago Bulls in February of 2008, and then dealt again to the Charlotte Bobcats in the summer following the end of that season. In February of 2009, his fortunes finally began to change as he was sent to the Los Angeles Lakers. It was interesting that the first chance he got to be a significant part of a team's rotation was with the best team he'd played for in the league.

Playing Time with LA Lakers

As the 2008-2009 season wound down and the playoffs neared, Shannon Brown all of a sudden saw a bump in his playing time. That grinding defense he had learned while at Michigan State was about to pay dividends. He ended up playing a big part in the Lakers winning the championship and was resigned at the close of the season. In 2010, he signed another two year extension to avoid free agency and remain with Los Angeles.

Over the course of his early NBA career, Shannon Brown did not experience the kind of success he had probably envisioned growing up as Illinois' Mr. Basketball. In most cases players like that think they are going to be the leading scorers of their team everywhere they go. But thanks to his tutelage under Tom Izzo at Michigan State while in college, Shannon Brown was ready when a good opportunity finally arrived. He made the most of the time he was give to play and was rewarded with an extension and job security.

Shannon Brown is still young, only seven years removed from high school. He has enough money to buy a nice car and even pay the online car insurance premium. He is engaged to a famous singer. And things are only looking up for him going forward. The path Shannon Brown took to become a Laker was not the most conventional one. After being trade bait numerous times, Shannon Brown found a home in Hollywood as an LA Laker.
