Auto Technology that Helps Prevent Accidents
Like avoiding traffic ticket tips, auto technology that helps prevent accidents is just another example of a general trend through the years towards an ever increasing emphasis on safety in the industry. First it was seat belts, which revolutionized auto safety and helped many more drivers and passengers survive wrecks. Then, air bags appeared and brought with them the increased occurrence of complete avoidance of injury. Now, automakers are going a step further and introducing in increasing frequency systems that work in different ways to prevent accidents altogether.
Crash Prevention Systems
Also called crash prevention systems by some companies, these are various applications of technology that actually give the vehicle an active role to play in the avoidance of collisions. There are many different examples of these systems in use in cars of all types and makes these days. At first they were only appearing primarily in luxury vehicles; but now even regular every day car insurance policy holders can have them in their Fords and Volvos as well.
From sensors to cameras and on board computers, all these different things warn drivers in their own ways of potential dangers, get occupants better prepared if collision appears imminent, and even take action to avoid the accident if the driver fails to do so. Some of the autos have features that allow the on board computer to apply brakes if the driver is following too closely based on analysis of speed and following distance behind another object, or if a collision is just about to happen and the driver does not react in time by braking.
Adaptive Cruise Control
Driving in traffic is one danger that tends to lead to many car accidents. Adaptive cruise control is one example of the car taking over when the driver is not being safe enough in traffic. Another example coming from a very similar concern for avoiding other cars in traffic is lane departure prevention, which corrects the course of the vehicle when it seems to be drifting out of its lane.
There are many different systems in place, many of which share some sort of version of brake support that will allow the car to stop itself if the driver does not notice the impending danger and thus fails to respond in time. These and other features are intended to reduce the number of avoidable accidents that motorists get into. Presumably as they become more common, these examples of technology really ought to have some sort of impact on auto insurance estimates if they do in fact manage to drive down accident totals.
Stop and Go Technology
One interesting technology that some drivers might actually be leery of is stop and go assist, which stops and starts cars in stop and go traffic during morning and evening rush hour or at other times when traffic volumes are that heavy. This might seem like a good idea if it works perfectly, but many drivers might be uneasy about surrendering control of their own safety in such a complete way in this case. Many of the other technologies are only used as secondary means of ensuring safety, but this one might be more than that.
As time passes and technologies become more and more impressive and capable of doing ever more, it will be instructive to see how auto owners respond to these features when they start taking control of the vehicle away from the driver. Auto technology that prevents car accidents may be just the beginning, because this type of research is still in its relative infancy, so there could be more coming down the road.
