Teddy Pendergrass Tribute

In contrast to Taylor Swift's VMA awards appearance, the entertainment industry has also had some somber news to report.  Teddy Pendergrass, the soulful singer from Philadelphia who made name for himself before being paralyzed in a car accident in the 1980s, died earlier this year and is remembered in an episode of "Unsung," a documentary series. Teddy Pendergrass was becoming a sex symbol and seemed to be just on the verge of becoming a superstar in the music business when Pendergrass was involved in a tragic car accident that left him paralyzed from the neck down.

Pendergrass Influences Many Modern Musicians

People in the music industry often speak of Teddy as someone who was highly influential in the business. His story was just another example of the way incredible success stories in the entertainment world sometimes turn into tragedies. With eight gold and platinum records to his credit [1], it is clear that Teddy Pendergrass did carve out a name for himself, with some of his commercial success coming after the accident; still, one has to wonder what might have been had he been spared that injury.

When Teddy Pendergrass died in January of 2010, thousands of fans showed up at the Pendergrass funeral in Philadelphia, a monument to his influence and lasting popularity. He was an ordained minister as well as a popular R&B singer and songwriter. At the time of the accident, cars were not equipped with many of the safety features that come standard on today's vehicles. This fact alone is reason enough for car buyers to insist on some of the advanced features that are available on new vehicles. The fact of the matter is that safety features save lives and prevent serious injuries like the one Teddy Pendergrass suffered.

Car Insurance Safety Discounts

And more than that, they also can help you save on your car insurance. And as drivers and members of the population who have seen all too many accidents in which the drivers died or were severely injured, we have the responsibility to take auto insurance very seriously. There is no doubt that the right safety features can save lives. And there is no doubting that good car insurance can save us financially when serious accidents happen. Take advantage of safety discounts and keep auto insurance rates low while also getting the best possible protection against injury and death in the event of an accident.

The fact of the matter is that many injuries suffered in auto accidents could have been prevented, either by the use of seat belts or by the inclusion of advanced safety features on cars. Someone like Teddy driving around all those years ago did not have the chance to use an airbag or advanced passive restraint system to protect his neck and spine; but as drivers today, we have this chance that Teddy did not have. Thinking about what happened to Teddy Pendergrass, and thinking about car accidents in general, makes it clear that quality car insurance is of the utmost importance.

When we forego auto insurance or skimp on a bare bones policy, we are just being cheap. Not all of us will end up in a situation like Teddy Pendergrass, but there are many auto accidents with injuries similar to that of Pendergrass that could have been avoided, and many in which the driver did not have sufficient insurance for proper medical care.

Car Insurance and Driving Safety

Someone like Teddy who went through that accident and had to live with the effects of it for over 25 years would surely advise anyone to do whatever they could to avoid similar circumstances. Car insurance, like car safety devices and insurance company ratings, tries to control risk to the greatest extent possible. Accidents like the one that happened to Teddy may still occur; but with good insurance we'll be covered if we have injuries like Pendergrass, and if our cars are safe enough we may not get hurt at all the way Teddy Pendergrass did.

Pendergrass was a soulful musician who poured his heart out on stage and in the studio. His life's work was to make joyful or sorrowful sounds of emotional expression that resonated with his fans. Teddy had a gift, and will be remembered fondly long after he has passed.

One of the lessons drivers might learn from this singer is one about safety behind the wheel. Too many accidents each year result in injuries that could have been avoided. And another might be about insurance. Too many injured drivers don't get the care they need because of their insurance situation. Don't let this happen to you. Learn from Teddy Pendergrass and so many others who have been injured in car accidents. Get complete and adequate auto insurance and make sure you and the members of your family will be well covered in the event of an injury accident.
