Seth Rogan isn't the only new comic actor whose star has begun to shine. On October 29, actor and comedian Zach Galifianakis appeared on an episode of Bill Maher along with some other guests who had various opinions of California's Proposition 19 which was to appear on the November ballot and had to do with the legalization of marijuana. During the segment, Zach Galifianakis appeared to pull out and smoke a marijuana cigarette. After the show had ended and aired and he was interviewed about it, Bill Maher denied that it was actually a joint but that what was actually used was some sort of prop.
Whatever the case may be, there has been some controversy ever since the segment aired, with some even questioning whether the actor could be arrested and put into jail for the alleged offense. Law enforcement in the local area has shown no interest in the case, saying among other things that it would need direct evidence and that the charge might not even hold up even if it was marijuana that Zach Galifianakis was smoking. About all the hoopla has accomplished is to bring more attention to the Bill Maher show and to the actor. It did not help Proposition 19 and help sway voters, as the proposal was defeated in the California state elections.
The Hangover 2 Filming
Zach Galifianakis is currently at work filming the much anticipated sequel to the hit movie The Hangover, aptly titled The Hangover 2, which is due out in 2011. This Todd Phillips directed movie has also been the subject of a bit of controversy as the studio decided to drop beleaguered actor Mel Gibson from a small role he had in the film. Mel Gibson was replaced in The Hangover 2 with Liam Neeson, who is a lot taller than Mel but should still do a fine job in the role.
Before The Hangover sort of made Zach Galifianakis a household name, he was more of an underground comic. He did a lot of stand up and had a few small minor roles along with some TV work. Most of his work up until his breakout role was less commercial in its nature, but it appears he has become a bit more relevant to the mainstream following the huge success of The Hangover. But even in playing that role, he did his job in such an unconventional way that it could hardly be said that Zach Galifianakis sold out to Hollywood or anything like that. If anything, we should say that Hollywood sold out to Zach Galifianakis because the studios are all of a sudden willing to throw big money at him to basically be the character he has developed through his standup routine.
New Zach Galifianakis Movies Coming
Since his star power has increased, studios are taking advantage and really hyping his involvement in projects even though he only plays supporting roles in them. There are a few new movies; Up in the Air an Oscar nominated film, G Force, and Youth in Revolt. His career is going up in smoke even as we speak. It is interesting to witness how just one role can help an actor so much the way it has for Zach Galifianakis. Fans of the Hangover franchise (yes, it has to be called that now) and all civiilian or military car insurance customers who love good movies have to be looking forward to the next installment coming out in 2011. With the publicity surrounding Zach Galifianakis and his recent Bill Maher appearance, one hopes the adage is true that there is no such thing as bad PR.
